The Old Red Lion
Tucked away on Bedford Rd in Houghton Regis, The Old Red Lion stands as one of Dunstable’s most inviting gastro-pub-style restaurants. Whether you’re swinging by for a quick bite, planning a leisurely dinner, or just in the mood for a pint of something cold, this place gets it right across the board.
What really hits first is the warm, laid-back vibe. The Old Red Lion balances rustic pub charm with thoughtful modern touches-comfortable seating, a spacious bar area, and yes, full accessibility for everyone, including wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and dedicated seating. It's the kind of place where solo diners feel just as welcome as families out for a weekend treat.
Start off light? Try the Tempura Prawns Starter-golden, crispy, and served with a dipping sauce that packs just the right punch. Or maybe you lean toward a comforting Pumpkin Soup, especially on those chilly English afternoons. The menu’s designed to be inclusive, so alongside the hearty meat options, you’ll find vegetarian and vegan dishes that hold their own in both flavor and presentation.
If you’re coming hungry, the Beef Carvery or Sirloin Steak might just be your best friend. Perfectly cooked, generously portioned, and served with all the trimmings. The Wild Muslogi Risotto is a surprise star-rich and earthy, balancing creaminess and bite just right. There’s also the crowd-pleasing Fish and Chips, a classic done properly here: flaky white fish wrapped in crisp batter with thick-cut chips that beg for a splash of malt vinegar.
And let’s not ignore the grill section-Filet Steak and Chips, Stuffed Pork Belly, or the Tennessee Combo for those who like their meats smoky, juicy, and generous. For something a little more refined, the Sea Bass offers a fresh, light alternative with seasonal vegetables that complement rather than overwhelm.
To wash it all down? The drinks menu is impressive without being overwhelming. If you’re a beer lover, there’s a great selection on tap, including Stella Artois and local favorites. Fancy something fizzy? The Spritz Veneziano is refreshingly balanced, perfect with lighter dishes or as a pre-meal aperitif. They also serve wine, spirits, cocktails, and a rather satisfying coffee-not always easy to find in pubs, but here it’s done right.
One of the best parts of The Old Red Lion is that it caters to nearly every type of diner. Whether you’re catching up over drinks in their outdoor seating area, grabbing a late-night bite, or looking for a relaxed private dining room experience, they’ve got you covered. It’s also ideal for solo visitors, with small plates, bar service, and friendly staff who never make you feel rushed.
And let’s talk dessert-because skipping it would be a mistake. The Chocolate Brownie is dense, gooey, and rich without being overbearing, while the Strawberry Ice Cream offers a lighter, sweeter finish. Or, if you're feeling fancy, the Parfait delivers a creamy-smooth indulgence that pairs well with a final glass of wine.
What sets The Old Red Lion apart is that it’s not trying too hard. It doesn’t need to. The service is attentive, the food is consistent, and the atmosphere invites you to linger a bit longer than you planned. It’s a dependable spot for a long lunch, casual dinner, or a cheeky midweek treat. With offerings like all-you-can-eat, bar games, and the ability to dine in, takeaway, or even opt for delivery, it’s built around convenience without cutting corners on quality.

Had a lovely meal with some old work colleagues. Patch was brilliant: really friendly and helpful. We even got to meet Luna! The food was delicious and came out piping hot. Very reasonable price-wise, too. Lovely interior but would've been nice to see it busier. The garden looks fab, too, but not quite the weather for it yet! Very accommodating of a larger group :)
First time back after many years. Heard that they had undergone new ownership and after a long day / couldn't be bothered to cook. Me and my wife decided to give it a try. Honestly...wow, decor looks great and a lot of time and effort has gone in to transforming the pub. We both went for the carvery and although it was end of day, the food was still great and you can tell a lot of preparation goes into quality with fresh ingredients. Our waitress Faith was amazing and super friendly. Patch the manager played great music and took some time to have a chat with us as we were leaving. Overall, we'll absolutely be back for another visit. Keep up the great job!
Booked 'the nook' area to hold a baby shower and staff were amazing! They were really helpful in asking if we needed anything, allowed for decorations to be put up and checked in regularly to see if they could help/if there was anything they could do. Food was delicious, drinks aswell and very reasonable prices. There is plenty of parking. A great menu choice and the pub itself is lovely with seating inside and out! I honestly would hold future events here and go for dinner/lunch again when I'm back in the area! Zero complaints just excellent!!
Returned here for the first time after many years! Staff were very friendly, especially our waitress Maria. Carvery was lovely, very generous portions (meat) and great selection of vegetables/trimmings. Deserts were also very nice, too many to choose from Looking forward to returning soon as there is also plenty of choice on the main menu! All in all, a very welcoming pub/restaurant with a cosy /modern and clean atmosphere!
Faith (our server) was excellent and a real credit to the restaurant. Very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Carvery was delicious! Three types of meat and lots of vegetables.
